Introduction

You've heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Is that true? If so, what should you eat in the morning and how can you find the time to shovel it in on your way to catch the bus?

The Task

You have been hired by Oscar Mayer® to launch their newest product: Breakfastables. You will get to choose the foods in the new package and then advertise it. You want to make moms and kids happy with this product, so you will be searching for foods that are healthy, provide energy, and are good to eat.

The Process
  1. Open and print the table. Then brainstorm a list of at least 15 breakfast foods. Decide if the foods:
    - are "yum" or "yuck"
    - keep you full until lunch or you feel hungry by midmorning
    - make you feel energetic or make you feel sluggish

  2. Now, using the links below, analyze the nutritious content of your breakfast choices.  Find as much information for each food as possible.

Breakfast Breakdown               Best and Worst                      Fact Search
  3. Learn as much as you can about the food guide pyramid from the links below. Decide where each of your breakfast foods fit on the pyramid.

Food Guide Pyramid         Work the Pyramid
  4. Now, knowing what you know about nutrition and breakfast foods, select foods that you think will make the tastiest, most energy-rich, nutritional selection to be packaged in a "Breakfastable."
  5. Draw the packaging for the Breakfastable in Word, Paint, or by hand. If you draw it by hand, have your teacher scan the picture so you can use it in your presentation later.
  6. Learn about advertising from the following links. Do you agree with the tricks advertisers use? Do you ever fall for them?

                            Ad Tricks                                 Ad Language
  7. Create an advertisement for your Breakfastable. Be sure to use at least two of the advertising tricks you've learned. You may choose to make a magazine or poster ad, a Power Point slide show, or a TV commercial.

Evaluation
