Classroom Discipline
In order to provide our students with the excellent educational climate they deserve, we will use the following behavior management plan. Every student has four crayons in a crayon box on our behavior board in the classroom. The first crayon is yellow, the next red, then blue, and the last crayon is black. The crayons will all be yellow every morning. If a child does not follow one of the rules or expected behaviors, the child's crayons will be pulled.
These are the classroom rules and expected behaviors:
1. Be responsible.
2. Respect yourself and others.
3. Choose to learn.
4. Allow the teacher to teach.
5. Do your personal best.
6. Observe all rules and procedures.
1st offense - Student will pull their yellow crayon. The consequence will be to lose 5 minutes of recess.
2nd offense- Student will pull their red crayon. The consequence will be to lose 10 minutes of recess.
3rd offense -. Student will pull their blue crayon. The consequence will be to lose 15 minutes of recess
4th offense – Student will pull their black crayon. The consequence will be to lose all of recess and a note will be sent home to parents.
***Should a child continue to display inappropriate behavior, a conference will be held with the principal, the teacher and the parent.
SEVERE CLAUSE: A severe clause occurs when there is a verbal and/or physical abuse to fellow student or teacher. If this occurs, the student is sent to the office to be handled by administration.

Attendance
Good attendance is very important in first grade. New skills are learned daily and students can get behind very quickly if they have poor attendance. I will send home any work that your child needs to make up. Your child has three days for each day of absence to return the work. Please talk to me about a situation that might keep your child from completing the make-up work.
Since our teaching schedules remain the same each day, students who are continually tardy miss the same subject each day. This means that the student becomes weak in that academic area. Most students are at their peak learning in the morning and that is when we schedule our most important and intensive subjects. Please make sure your child is at school on time (no later than 8:30) so that they do not miss out on important learning.
The Hartville/Grovespring attendance policy states that more than 10 absences are excessive and can result in retention.

Classroom Parties
Throughout the year we will be having three scheduled parties. The parties that we will have are the Fall Party, Christmas Party, and Valentine’s Day Party. It will be necessary to have parent assistance at each of the parties in order to insure a happy safe time for all of the children. All three of the parties will be in the afternoon. Please take time to consider if you can be available to assist in the classroom during any of the parties or of you would be able to help plan the events or help supply the healthy snacks. Any and all help will be welcomed and appreciated my both myself and the students.

First Grade Curriculum
Reading/Language Arts
We will use the Scott Foresman Reading series, which will incorporate all of the language arts skills - reading, phonics reinforcement, language and grammar skills, and handwriting. This program will include:
Foundations of Literacy
Phonics, Word Analysis, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Fluency
Comprehension
Language and Communication
Research and Study Skills
In addition to this program we will also be using the Accelerated Reader program which allows students to read books at their level and also gives them the freedom to chose books that they are interested in reading.
Handwriting
We will use the D'Nealian handwriting method. D'Nealian handwriting is a continuous-stroke method that allows children to write letters and words faster and easier than ball-and-stick methods. Most lower-case manuscript letters have the same form as their cursive counterpart, which makes the transition to cursive quick and easy. The emphasis on D'Nealian Handwriting is on legibility. This means the goal for children is to write something someone can read right away.
Phonics
We will be using the Scott Foresman Phonics program. This program provides a wide range of activities to practice and extend children’s phonemic awareness skills, phonics skills, and word study skills. The phonics lessons support the direct and systematic phonics instruction in Scott Foresman Reading.
Spelling
First grade spelling will once again be the Scott Foresman. The words will be sight words as well as words used in our phonics and reading lessons. Sight words are words that do not follow phonics rules and must be memorized. We work on sight words in class daily but some students will need extra practice at home to master these words.
Math
We will be using Harcourt Math in first grade. This math program is based on scientific research that focuses on effective learning process and instructional strategies that are essential for success in a wide range of learners. The program has a total of six units that will be covered during the course of the year. Each chapter will have Family Involvement Activities include an explanation letter, some Math vocabulary, family games and practice. This is the first year that we are using this program so it will be a leaning experience not only for the students, but for the parents and of course the teacher also. Thank you in advance for assisting your child with these activities.
Social Studies
We will use Neighborhoods Near and Far from Nystrom. We will learn about neighborhoods and the concept focus will be on places to live, places to work, places to work and places to play. We will use Maps, Globes, and Graphs to build students' confidence and mastery of practical geography skills. The Weekly Reader will also me a part of our Social Studies lessons as we learn about things such as holidays and celebrations.
Science
We will be using Teacher Created Materials Science Grade 1. The lessons in this program will incorporate basic science skills as well many other concepts. Some of the concepts we will be learning about are plants, animals, simple machines, weather, etc. We will also be using Weekly Reader as a means of enriching our Science lessons.
