Communication
If you would like to contact me, please feel free to jot down a quick note and send it with your student or you can leave a meassage on my voice mail during the school day at 741-7141 Ext. 108. I will return your call after school hours. You can also reach me by email. My school email is hamptonr@hartville.k12.mo.us.

Folders and Planners

Your student will be given a designated Take Home folder. This will be a vinyl folder used for taking home graded papers and notices from teachers and the office. The regular routine will be for the folder to be sent home on Fridays or the last day of the week with graded papers for the week. This will include a sheet for parent signature and date. Students will be required to return this to school the following Monday. The purpose of this folder is to keep you informed on a weekly basis on your student's progress. To keep students accountable, this folder will be a part of a separate quarterly study skills grade.
Student Planners
This year students will be provided a student planner. The purpose is for students to keep track of daily assignments and due dates. Students will be responsible to take home their planners, along with any unfinished work for the day. This is to be completed at home, and returned to school. Planners should be brought to school each day. If a student has completed all work, it is not necessary to take it home. If a student loses his/her planner, the student will be required to purchase a new one. The planner, along with the take home folder, will comprise the quarterly study skills grade.

Academics

Spelling

Spelling word lists will be sent home Mondays or the first day of the week. Spelling tests will be on Fridays, or the last day of the week. Every six weeks, we have a reading review week and take a reading test. During this week, there are no spelling words. Also generally, if it is a three-day week, there is no spelling that week.

Reading Homework

Each Monday or the first day of the school week students will have a reading story assignment from their reading textbook or their science or social studies textbook. This story or article must be read aloud to an adult. Students will bring home an assignment form that is to be signed by an adult, returning to school the next day. If the form is lost, a note saying the assignment was read and signed by an adult will be acceptable, but the still will still need to answer the questions that go with the reading homework. If the student does not bring back the signed sheet or note, the student will read the story that day at recess.

Study Guides

For Social Studies and Science tests, a test notice or study guide with a test date will be sent home. This will tell what the test will be over, and gives the test date. Books and/or study guides will be sent home hopefully two days before the test and always the day before the test. I encourage parents to spend time studying with your child. This is a good opportunity for your to help your child succeed. Studying with your child helps him/her to know you consider learning important.

Awards

To earn awards that will be presented at the end of the year awards assembly, students must do the following:

Reading Circle Certificate-read at least 17 books throughout the year and pass Accelerated Reader tests on these books.

Accelerated Reading Award-Meet AR goals for all four quarters.

Multiplication Award- Pass all the timed multiplication tests.

Academic Area Awards (Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.)-The top two students in each subject area receive these awards based upon their averages for all four quarters.

Attendance and Behavior Quarterly Rewards

Students are rewarded for attendance, good behavior and hard work at the end of each quarter. The requirements for the reward are:

1. No more than 5% unexcused absences

2. No discipline notices from the office

3. Good work habits in the classroom

The rewards vary each quarter, ranging from field trips to movie parties.

Library/Accelerated Reader

School Library

We will have one regular checkout time each week. Each child is allowed two books for one week at a time. Our library day is Wednesday. School library books can be read at home or at school. Be sure to send books back on Wednesday so new books can be checked out.

Classroom Library

Classroom library books are to be read in class. Books from the classroom library are not to be taken home. These books have the teacher's name in them, so if one does come home, please return it to school.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a program to improve reading ability and check students' reading comprehension. Students read books from the library that are labeled AR. The AR label on the library books is a light blue and shows the reading level and point value of each book. Students take a computer test over the book to earn credit for reading the book. Students must score at least 60% on the test to earn any credit for the book. The number of points required each quarter for your child will be determined by his/her performance on a computerized reading pretest, the STAR test, given the first weeks of school. AR takes the place of written book reports.

Discipline

The following are the rights and responsibilities for the third grade:

  • Everyone has the right to live safely.
  • Everyone has the right to learn.
  • Everyone has the responsibility to be polite.
  • Everyone has the responsibility to be honest.
  • Everyone has the responsibility to use time wisely.

Each student will begin the day with four behavior cards. If a student chooses to ignore the rights of others, or chooses to ignore their responsibilities, a card will be taken. For the first card taken, students lose the first half of the first recess. For the second card taken students lose the second half of the first recess. For the third card taken students lose the first half of their second recess. For the fourth card taken students lose the second half of recess. Students will write a note to parents explaining the reason for losing the day's recesses. The note will need to be signed by parents and returned to school the next day. If the note is not returned, students will lose another card. Students involved in any physical fighting, and/or verbal or physical threats will be sent to the office. Recess time lost is considered when conduct grades are given.
