About Me

Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be a teacher.  I played school, I helped my father with younger students at our one-room schoolhouse in Show Low, Arizona, and I admired my Grandma Rowland and Aunt Rosalyn who were also teachers.

Since 2000, I have taught sixth grade writing at Southern Boone, but this year I decided to teach 5th Grade and to enjoy getting to know kids in every content area.  I’m excited about the opportunity to infuse writing into every subject area of their day!

When I’m not teaching, I spend time with my family.  My 20-year-old daughter Amy is a sophomore at Columbia College, and we both enjoy rainstorms, talking on the phone, scrapbooking, and friends.  My 19-year-old son Philip works in Columbia and designs web sites for fun through his business, Faded Element.  Jennifer, my youngest, is a senior at Southern Boone High school this year. She shares my passion for reading books and playing the piano.  She is also an excellent percussionist who is Drum Line Captain this year.  I’m looking forward to attending her Volleyball and Soccer games!

My pets are also important to me.  My dog, TEXAS (all ten pounds of him), is smart and loves to fetch, cuddle, evade capture for the kennel, and eat cheese or turkey sandwich meat.  My cats, Baby and Scout, are really friendly-- when they need fed.  Traci, my 10 year old cocker spaniel, likes to howl at sirens and dig holes in my back yard!

I have lived in many interesting places. While growing up, I attended school on the reservation through the second grade in Holbrook, Arizona. After a year in Merced, California, I attended a one-room school house with my father for a teacher from grades 4-8.  I then lived with my grandmother and attended 9th grade in Napa, California, before moving with my family to North Dakota (brrrrrr!) for the rest of my high school years.

College found me in Lincoln, Nebraska, and as an adult, I’ve lived ten years in Germany--Augsburg and Wurzburg.  Every place I have lived has brought new experiences—sledding off the roof of my dorm, kayaking the Munich Olympic kayaking course, visiting Anne Frank’s house in Holland, meeting an avid painter in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and touring the Liechtenstein castle…among other things!

In the future I plan to become an elementary school principal and continue embarking on new experiences—perhaps parasailing, obtaining EMT certification, visiting my sister in Alaska,  or traveling to Australia!
